AI that asks before it acts

Most AI in productivity tools is too eager to help. It rewrites, auto-completes, and decides — often destroying the thing you were trying to say.

The copilot problem

Open a modern writing app and start typing. Before you've finished your sentence, the AI is already suggesting the next three. It italicizes your rough thought into something polished and generic. It "improves" your paragraph by removing the awkward phrasing that was actually the point. It auto-generates a summary of a document you haven't finished writing.

This is the dominant model for AI in productivity tools right now: act first, ask never. The assumption is that speed equals value, that any friction the AI can remove is friction worth removing. But this assumption is deeply wrong when it comes to thinking tools.

Thinking is friction. The struggle to articulate an idea is not a bug — it's the process by which the idea takes shape. When AI skips that struggle for you, it doesn't save you time. It robs you of the thought.

The three sins of current AI tools

After using dozens of AI-augmented productivity apps, I've noticed the same three failures repeated everywhere.

They overwrite your voice. Auto-complete and rewrite features optimize for fluency, not for meaning. They sand down your language into the same smooth, corporate cadence. Your notes start reading like they were written by the same bland assistant. The idiosyncratic phrasing that carried your actual intent? Gone.

They hallucinate with confidence. AI tools routinely generate plausible-sounding connections, summaries, and suggestions that are simply wrong. In a research context, this is dangerous. In a thinking context, it's corrupting — you start building on foundations that don't exist. And because the AI presents everything with the same calm certainty, you often don't notice until much later.

They make decisions they shouldn't. Auto-tagging. Auto-organizing. Auto-linking. These features sound helpful in a demo, but in practice they create a workspace that reorganizes itself without your consent. You put something in a specific place for a reason. You left that note untagged because you weren't sure yet. The AI's eagerness to "help" disrupts the very intentionality that makes a workspace useful.
